There were two unusual things about Doc Connor’s call. First, the patient was already dead, and second, the patient was a three-year-old filly. Tom, a well-known trainer, knew the horse had not died of heart failure, and Doc was sure it had been poisoned.
The mare’s owner ran a night club, and it was obvious that personal spite against him had been responsible for the sudden death. An ex-jockey, Snuffy, spoke from the grave. It was what he said, or implied he could have said before he departed this life, that started Doc Connor in the right direction.
