The use of surgery to deliver babies is known as cesarean delivery. It is performed when vaginal delivery can put the life of the mother or the baby at risk. Complicated cases such as twin pregnancy, obstructed labor, breech birth, high blood pressure in the mother often lead to cesarean delivery. Problems with umbilical cord can be another reason for choosing this technique. It can be done with a spinal block, where the mother is awake, or with general anesthesia. In the process of cesarean delivery, the bladder is drained using a urinary catheter and an antiseptic is used to clean the abdomen skin. An incision is made through the mother’s lower abdomen, the uterus is opened with another incision and the baby is delivered. Both the incisions are stitched and closed in the end.
